Walk into any Best Buy, pull up Newegg, or scroll through Amazon listings for gaming monitors, and you'll see the same bold claims plastered everywhere: 1ms response time. It sounds definitive. It sounds fast. It sounds like the thing you need to dominate in Valorant or Call of Duty: Warzone.
It's also, in most cases, a carefully engineered half-truth.
Response time marketing has become one of the most misleading corners of the PC hardware space, and it's costing gamers real money. Let's break down exactly what's happening — and what numbers you should actually care about.
What "Response Time" Even Means (And Why the Definition Is Slippery)
At its core, response time refers to how quickly a monitor's pixel can transition from one color state to another. Slower transitions create a ghosting effect — that blurry trail you see behind fast-moving objects, especially in dark scenes or during rapid camera pans.
Here's where things get shady: there's no universal industry standard forcing manufacturers to measure and report this number the same way. Two monitors can both advertise 1ms response times using completely different testing methods, and their actual in-game performance can be worlds apart.

Casual and single-player gaming: Anything under 8–10ms is effectively imperceptible for most players in story-driven or slower-paced games. Spending extra money chasing sub-2ms response times for Elden Ring or Starfield is genuinely unnecessary.
VA panels — the complicated case: VA technology offers excellent contrast ratios and deep blacks, which look stunning in dark game environments. But VA panels have historically struggled with dark-to-dark transitions, where pixels moving between similar dark shades can be painfully slow — sometimes exceeding 20ms — even when the same panel advertises a 1ms GtG spec measured on brighter transitions. This is a real issue in night scenes and dark corridors that the spec sheet will never tell you about.
How to Actually Evaluate a Monitor Before You Buy
