Walk into a Micro Center or scroll through Newegg's gaming monitor section right now and you'll see refresh rates treated like a spec arms race — 144Hz, 165Hz, 240Hz, 360Hz, and monitors that are apparently flirting with 500Hz. The marketing is relentless: more hertz, faster reactions, more wins. But somewhere between 144Hz and the stratosphere, something important gets lost in the pitch. The returns start diminishing fast, and the cost keeps climbing.

Let's be real about what's actually happening here.

What Refresh Rate Actually Does (And Doesn't Do)

First, the basics without the fluff. Refresh rate is how many times per second your monitor redraws the image on screen. At 60Hz, that's 60 times. At 144Hz, it's 144 times. Higher rates mean each frame is displayed for a shorter window of time, which reduces motion blur and makes fast movement look sharper and more fluid.

The perceptual benefit is real — nobody who has switched from 60Hz to 144Hz has ever wanted to go back. That jump is genuinely transformative. The question is what happens after that, and whether the improvements continue at the same rate as the price tag.

Spoiler: they absolutely do not.

The 60 to 144 Jump Is Magic. The 144 to 240 Jump Is... Fine.

Human vision doesn't process motion linearly. The improvement from 60Hz to 144Hz feels enormous because you're cutting frame time from ~16.7ms to ~6.9ms — that's nearly 10 milliseconds of difference. At 240Hz, you're at ~4.2ms. Going from 144Hz to 240Hz saves you less than 3 milliseconds of frame time.

In practical terms: yes, some people can perceive this difference, especially in very fast-twitch scenarios. But the population of people who can reliably distinguish 144Hz from 240Hz in a blind test is smaller than monitor ads would have you believe. Studies on this vary, but the general consensus among vision researchers is that most people hit a sensitivity ceiling somewhere in the 150–200Hz range under real-world conditions.

That doesn't mean 240Hz is useless. It means the benefit is narrower and more conditional than the marketing suggests.

Where 165Hz Quietly Became the Smartest Buy

Here's the refresh rate nobody puts on a billboard: 165Hz. It's the sweet spot that sits in a weird middle ground — close enough to 144Hz that the perceptual difference is marginal, but priced aggressively because it's not a "flagship" spec.

Many of the best IPS and OLED panels in the $300–$500 range top out at 165Hz, and they're often significantly better in other ways — color accuracy, contrast ratio, pixel response time, HDR implementation — than comparably priced 240Hz monitors that cut corners elsewhere to hit that headline number.

For the vast majority of gamers playing titles like Apex Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty, or even Fortnite at a casual-to-intermediate competitive level, a great 165Hz monitor will look and feel better than a mediocre 240Hz monitor. Resolution, panel quality, and response time consistency matter alongside refresh rate, not instead of it.

The GPU Tax Nobody Talks About

Here's where chasing ultra-high refresh rates gets genuinely expensive in a way that's easy to overlook: to actually use 240Hz, you need to be consistently pushing 240+ frames per second in the game you're playing. Otherwise, you're paying for a monitor spec you can't feed.

Pushing 240fps in a competitive shooter like CS2 on a capable rig? Totally achievable. Trying to hit 240fps in a demanding title like Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, or even newer releases with heavy anti-aliasing? You're going to be looking at a 240Hz monitor displaying 90fps, which is just a very expensive 90fps experience.

The GPU investment required to reliably saturate a 240Hz display in anything beyond esports titles is substantial. We're talking RTX 4080 territory or above for modern AAA games at 1080p with competitive settings. By the time you've budgeted for the monitor and the GPU to drive it, you could have bought a phenomenal 1440p 165Hz setup that looks dramatically better in every game you actually play.

Genre Matters More Than You Think

Not all games benefit equally from high refresh rates, and this is where the "just buy 240Hz" crowd loses me.

Competitive FPS and Battle Royale — This is where high refresh rates genuinely earn their keep. Valorant, CS2, Apex Legends, Warzone. Fast target acquisition and low input latency can translate to measurable advantages here. If this is your primary genre and you play at a high level, 240Hz has a legitimate argument.

RPGs, open-world, and single-player games — The Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, Red Dead Redemption 2. Honestly? 60Hz is fine for these. 144Hz feels great. 240Hz is irrelevant. Nobody is losing a boss fight because they're on 165Hz.

Racing and sports games — Gran Turismo-style titles benefit from smooth motion, but the perceptual gains plateau early. 144Hz is more than sufficient.

Strategy and MOBAs — League of Legends players swear by high refresh rates, but the game's art style and pace mean you're well within the range of diminishing returns at 144Hz.

A Practical Recommendation Framework

Here's how to actually think about this decision:

The Bottom Line

The refresh rate arms race is real, and it's driven by marketing incentives more than perceptual science. 144Hz changed gaming. 165Hz refined it. 240Hz helps a specific subset of players in a specific subset of games — and costs everyone else money they didn't need to spend.

Before you buy into the spec sheet, ask yourself what you actually play, at what skill level, and whether your GPU can even deliver the frames to justify the panel. More hertz is better in a vacuum. In the real world, it's about finding the point where the money you'd spend on refresh rate buys you more joy as resolution, panel quality, or GPU headroom instead.

For most of us, that point is 144Hz. Maybe 165Hz. Almost certainly not 240Hz — at least not yet.
