Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video Are All Streaming in 'HD' — So Why Do They Look So Different?

Open up Netflix and queue something up. Then flip to Disney+ and do the same. Now try Amazon Prime Video. Same TV, same internet connection, same eyes — but if you're paying attention, the picture quality can feel noticeably different between platforms. Sometimes dramatically so.
This isn't your imagination. The major streaming services have been quietly waging a quality war behind the scenes, and the standards they've each settled on are more fragmented — and more consequential for your viewing experience — than most people realize.
The Bitrate Problem Nobody Puts on the Marketing Page
Bitrate is the single biggest factor determining how good streamed video actually looks, and it's the number these companies almost never advertise clearly. Think of bitrate as the amount of data being pushed to your screen per second — higher numbers generally mean more detail, less compression artifacting, and cleaner motion.
Here's where things get uncomfortable. Netflix's 4K HDR streams typically land somewhere between 15-25 Mbps depending on the content. Disney+, by contrast, has been documented streaming some 4K content at bitrates exceeding 40 Mbps — significantly more data, noticeably richer detail in high-motion scenes. Amazon Prime Video sits somewhere in the middle, often in the 15-20 Mbps range for 4K, though it varies widely by title.
For regular HD (1080p) content, the gaps are just as real. Netflix's 1080p streams often hover around 5-7 Mbps. That's... fine. But it's not exceptional, and on a large TV or monitor, compression artifacts in dark scenes or during fast camera pans can become visible to anyone who knows what to look for.
Codecs: The Technical Argument Nobody Asked For (But Everyone Needs)
Beyond raw bitrate, the codec each platform uses determines how efficiently that data gets turned into a picture. This is where the alphabet soup starts — H.264, H.265 (HEVC), AV1, VP9 — and where the platforms diverge even further.
Netflix has been an early adopter of AV1, a newer open-source codec that delivers better quality at lower bitrates. That's genuinely good news for subscribers — it means more efficient compression without a visible quality hit. They've also invested heavily in a per-title encoding system that analyzes content and optimizes settings for each specific show or movie.
Disney+ leans heavily on H.265/HEVC for its 4K content, which is a solid codec but less efficient than AV1. The trade-off is that Disney compensates with those higher bitrates mentioned above, which helps explain why Marvel and Pixar content often looks strikingly sharp even on large screens.
Amazon Prime Video's approach is arguably the most inconsistent. Codec usage and bitrate can vary significantly depending on the device you're watching on, your region, and whether the content is an Amazon Original or a licensed title. It's not uncommon for the same show to look noticeably different on a Fire TV Stick versus a smart TV app.
What About HDR? That's Also a Mess.
High Dynamic Range is supposed to be the great equalizer — richer colors, deeper blacks, brighter highlights. But HDR support across platforms is another area where standardization has completely broken down.
Netflix supports HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ on select content. Disney+ offers Dolby Vision and HDR10 but has been slower to adopt HDR10+. Amazon Prime Video supports all three formats but, again, implementation quality varies by title.
Dolby Vision is generally considered the premium tier here — it uses dynamic metadata that adjusts the HDR effect scene by scene rather than applying a one-size-fits-all setting. If a platform offers it and your TV supports it, it's almost always the better choice. But not every title on any platform carries Dolby Vision certification, and finding out which ones do usually requires digging through third-party databases rather than any clear in-app labeling.
The Audio Side of the Quality Equation
Video gets most of the attention, but audio quality is equally fragmented. Netflix offers Dolby Atmos on a growing library of titles. Disney+ has been rolling out Atmos more aggressively, particularly for its big-budget releases. Amazon Prime Video offers Atmos as well, but again — which titles, on which devices, depends on a constellation of factors that aren't always obvious.
For most US subscribers on mid-tier plans, you may not even be getting the highest audio quality your subscription technically allows. It's worth checking your account settings and confirming your app is configured to request the best available audio format.
How to Actually Optimize Your Streaming Setup
Here's the practical part. You can't force these platforms to overhaul their compression pipelines overnight, but you can make sure you're getting the best of what they're currently offering.
Check your plan tier. Netflix's standard plan doesn't offer 4K. Disney+'s base plan does, but you need to confirm it in settings. Always verify you're subscribed to the tier that matches your hardware.
Use the right device. Streaming apps on smart TVs and dedicated streaming boxes (Apple TV 4K, Nvidia Shield, Roku Ultra) typically deliver better quality than built-in TV apps or game console ports. The Nvidia Shield in particular is notable for supporting AV1 decoding and often delivers the best Netflix picture quality available.
Hardwire your connection if possible. Wi-Fi introduces variability. A direct ethernet connection ensures your bandwidth is stable and that adaptive bitrate algorithms on these platforms are selecting the highest available quality tier.
Look for the quality badge — then verify it. Just because the app says 4K HDR doesn't mean you're getting the platform's maximum bitrate. Some services throttle based on network conditions even when they display the badge. Tools like the Netflix secret menu (hold down on the remote's select button during playback on some devices) can show you actual streaming bitrate in real time.
Prioritize Disney+ for visual showcase content. If you want to show off your TV's capabilities, Disney+'s higher bitrates and Dolby Vision implementation on flagship titles genuinely outperform the competition on most modern displays.
Will These Standards Ever Converge?
Honestly, probably not anytime soon — and that's partly by design. Each platform has made infrastructure investments that create competitive differentiation. Disney's higher bitrates are a selling point. Netflix's AV1 encoding efficiency helps them manage bandwidth costs at massive scale. Amazon's flexibility lets them serve the broadest possible device ecosystem.
What would actually help consumers is transparent, standardized quality labeling — something like a nutrition label for streaming that tells you the actual bitrate, codec, and HDR format for each title before you hit play. Some third-party sites like Streams Charts and JustWatch have started filling this gap, but it shouldn't require homework to know what you're getting.
Until the platforms get there, knowing what to look for — and how to configure your setup to capture the best of what's available — is the best tool you've got.
